Well Woman Exam

What is a well woman exam?

A well-woman exam is a preventive visit designed to help keep you healthy.

This annual visit with your gynecologist focuses on screening, prevention, and overall wellness at every stage of life. During your well-woman exam, we review age-appropriate screenings, perform a gynecologic exam, and discuss general aspects of your physical, emotional, and reproductive health.

The goal of this visit is to identify potential concerns early and support long-term health through prevention.

Important Scheduling Information

Because the well-woman exam is a preventive visit, it is not designed to manage or treat ongoing or complex medical concerns. Conditions such as:

  • Fibroids

  • Abnormal uterine bleeding

  • Pelvic pain

  • Hormonal concerns

  • Hypertension, diabetes, thyroid disease, or cholesterol issues

These concerns do require additional time, evaluation, and medical decision-making.

If you have concerns beyond routine preventive care, we are absolutely here to help. These issues may be addressed through a separate problem-focused visit or a follow-up appointment, allowing us to give each concern the attention it deserves.

Our priority is ensuring you feel heard and receive thorough, high-quality care—without rushing important conversations.

How often should I schedule a well woman exam?

Most insurance plans cover a well woman exam every year or 365 days from your last annual exam.

Can I get a well woman exam if I am a teenager or not sexually active?

Of course.  A well woman exam helps to make sure you are on the right path to female health.  This includes learning a proper breast exam, proper hygiene, any anatomical questions, and maintaining a relationship with a gynecologist.

What is included in a well woman exam?

  • Monitoring weight and vital signs
  • Reviewing last menstrual period
  • Cervical cancer screening, or better known as a pap smear
  • Domestic violence risks
  • Discussing wellness issues such as exercise and diet
  • Breast cancer screening and recommendations for mammograms
  • Colon cancer screening, depending on age
  • Screening for sexually transmitted diseases, if needed
  • Bone density testing to assess bone health, if needed
  • Screening for alcohol, substance abuse, and smoking habits
  • Discussing birth control and contraceptive options

Will my appointment be covered by my insurance?

The Affordable Health Care Act requires insurance plans to cover 100% of the cost of preventative care, such as a well woman visit.

Preventative care includes screenings and assessments, but not the management of existing medical conditions.

Discussions of problem-oriented issues may not be fully covered by your insurance.  You will have an extra charge if you chose to address issues at the time of an annual.  It is best to make a follow up visit so adequate time can be allocated to problem-oriented issues.

Some of the issues that are not covered during an annual exam include, but are not limited to:

  • Abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Missed periods
  • Infertility issues
  • Perimenopausal/Menopausal symptoms
  • Hair loss
  • Pain with intercourse
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Fibroids

If you do want to discuss these issues, please be aware that there will be an additional charge for the visit
